  • The programme began with a reception and guided introduction to WMU’s mission and global role in maritime and ocean education, research, and capacity development.

  • This was followed by a meet-and-greet session at the Global Ocean Institute, where students were welcomed by the Institute’s Director and research team. The exchange provided an overview of GOI’s work at the intersection of ocean governance, sustainability, and emerging marine technologies.

The thematic focus of the visit was ocean observation technologies and their implications for governance and legal frameworks. Presentations highlighted major research initiatives, including the Future Ocean Programme and related international projects that advance the use of ocean data to support climate action, sustainable resource management, and evidence-based policymaking. These discussions illustrated how scientific and technological developments are increasingly influencing regulatory approaches, compliance mechanisms, and international cooperation in the marine domain.

  • The visit concluded with an interactive discussion session, during which students engaged with researchers on the legal dimensions of ocean data, the governance of marine scientific research, and the evolving role of international institutions in ocean stewardship. The dialogue underscored the importance of equipping future legal professionals with an understanding of the scientific and technological context shaping modern ocean governance.

"collaboration between legal scholars and ocean experts"

The visit strengthened academic ties and reinforced the value of collaboration between legal scholars and ocean experts. By hosting students from Lund University, the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute continues to promote the integrated knowledge and cross-disciplinary cooperation needed to support sustainable and equitable ocean futures.
