On 8 June, the World Maritime University (WMU) and the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI), hosted a one-day visit for students from the National University of Singapore (NUS), as part of the NUS College Flagship Global Experience (GEx) Module.

Following a successful engagement in June 2025, students from the NUS College Flagship GEx Module returned to WMU for a visit focused on marine environmental issues, sustainability, and ocean governance.

The programme began with an introductory session titled “Overview of the Shipping Finance Market”, delivered by Dr. Satya Sahoo, Associate Professor of Shipping Finance and Management at WMU. The afternoon session was delivered by WMU-GOI researchers and began with an introduction to the WMU-GOI. This was followed by a substantive lecture on “Developing a resilient and effective Ocean Governance” by Dr. Aleke Stöfen-O’Brien, Associate Professor, and Dr. Ríán Derrig, Assistant Professor, who addressed the audience on future ocean governance models. Discussions explored what desirable and more inclusive ocean futures might look like and how they could be achieved.
The visit aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the intersection between science, policy, law, and sustainability in the maritime and ocean sectors. It also reflects the growing collaboration between WMU and the National University of Singapore in promoting interdisciplinary learning and global engagement on pressing ocean and maritime challenges
