Dr. Tafsir Matin Johansson delivered welcome remarks on behalf of WMU. An overview of the third pillar of the Nippon Foundation-funded Future Oceans Programme followed, with a focus on ocean observation technologies and the evolving legal and institutional frameworks shaping ocean stewardship.

WMU presentations were delivered by Associate Professor Matin Johansson, Assistant Professor Aspasia Pastra, and PhD candidates Suriya N. Sundararajan and Ayo Pacheco. The presentations addressed the governance of emerging ocean observation technologies, including their increasing autonomy, associated risks, and regulatory gaps in areas beyond national jurisdiction. They also explored the need for interoperable ocean biodiversity data and effective governance of marine genetic resources, emphasising standardisation, capacity development, and international collaboration.
