Dr. Vonintsoa Rafaly, Postdoctoral Fellow and Akrita Kaur, Project Associate at the World Maritime University (WMU)-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (GOI) participated in the inaugural summer school of the Governance Frameworks for the Nordic Energy Transition at Sea (GNTS) Network and the subsequent methodology workshop on Law, Society, and the Environment, held from 24-27 August 2026 in Voss and Bergen, Norway.

  • Dr. Vonintsoa Rafaly attended the inaugural GNTS summer school, which brought together PhD candidates, early-career researchers, and scholars from institutions including the University of Bergen, University of Gothenburg, University of Copenhagen, and Åbo Akademi University. The network aims to develop and enhance collaborations between scholars from the four institutions to strengthen knowledge on energy transition in the Nordics.

The summer school focused on key issues related to governing the energy transition at sea, including marine infrastructure, the law of the sea, maritime and shipping law, and contractual frameworks. It provided an opportunity for participants to exchange perspectives and engage with current research on the legal and governance challenges associated with the transition towards sustainable energy at sea.

  • Following the summer school, Akrita Kaur joined to participate in the Methodology Workshop organized by the COAST Research Center for Climate, Energy and Sustainability Law, titled “Law, Society and the Environment: Methodologies for a Changing World”.

The workshop provided an opportunity to explore different approaches to conducting research from a methodological perspective, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary research. It also offered an opportunity to engage with researchers working on topics at the intersection of law, society, and the environment, and to exchange perspectives on the scope and quality of different methodological approaches.

  • The events provided an inspiring meeting place for the next generation of researchers working at the intersection of sustainable energy, law, and ocean governance, while also strengthening opportunities for academic exchange and collaboration.
