WMU-GOI and UPF Lund Workshop Research, Academia and Practice in Dialogue: Advancing Maritime Affairs & Ocean Governance through Student Voices

  • This workshop is designed as an interdisciplinary forum to advance dialogue on key issues shaping maritime and ocean governance. It will open with a synoptic overview of the third pillar of the Nippon Foundation-funded Future Ocean Programme, with particular emphasis on ocean observation technologies, and the evolving legal and institutional frameworks that shape ocean stewardship.

Student Engagement and Dialogue

Building on this foundation, the workshop provides a platform for members of UPF Lund to critically present their contributions to the Association’s ongoing Maritime Affairs project, while also engaging in reflective dialogue on the project’s events, outputs, and intellectual trajectory to date. At its core, the initiative seeks to cultivate informed student engagement with pressing issues in maritime affairs and to deepen understanding of key actors operating across this multifaceted field.

a platform for exchange and learning

Structured as a reciprocal exchange, the workshop enables participants to present and refine their ideas while receiving feedback from established scholars and practitioners. By foregrounding student perspectives, the event highlights the importance of intellectual engagement beyond the classroom and emphasizes the value of dialogue between academia and practice.

  • The workshop will conclude with a forward-looking discussion, inviting participants to reflect on the future direction of the Maritime Affairs project and their evolving roles within the broader ocean and maritime governance landscape.
