Presentation on Biologging and UNCLOS at the University of New Hampshire

Dr. Tafsir Matin Johansson, Associate Professor at the World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI), will deliver a presentation entitled “Biologging, Marine Scientific Research and UNCLOS: Toward a Third Paradigm” on 6 November 2026, as part of the Ocean Seminar Series hosted by the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC) at the University of New Hampshire, United States.

BIOLOGGING, MARINE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND UNCLOS: TOWARD A THIRD PARADIGM

The presentation will explore the legal and governance implications of biologging, an emerging approach to ocean observation that uses sensor-equipped marine animals to collect data across maritime jurisdictional boundaries. Drawing on forthcoming joint research, Dr. Johansson will examine how the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) applies to such activities and propose an adaptive approach to balancing coastal State rights, scientific cooperation and the conservation benefits of biologging.

The Ocean Seminar Series brings together researchers and practitioners to explore developments across marine science, hydrography and ocean engineering, providing a platform for academic exchange on emerging scientific and technological challenges affecting the ocean.

  • Dr. Johansson’s participation forms part of the WMU-GOI Future Ocean Programme, contributing to the Programme’s research and outreach activities and strengthening academic exchange on the legal and governance dimensions of ocean observation and marine scientific research.
