
The World Maritime University-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI) will participate in the United Nations Association of Germany (DGVN) Nord Summer Academy 2026, titled "UN and the sea: Ocean Governance and Maritime Affair", taking place from 3–8 August 2026 in Hamburg, Germany.

Organized by the United Nations Association of Germany, the Summer Academy brings together students and young professionals to explore current issues in the law of the sea, maritime affairs, and ocean governance from both scientific and practical perspectives.

Throughout the week, participants will engage in independent study, interactive discussions, and expert-led lectures covering key topics in international ocean governance. The programme includes sessions on sustainability, security, and the role of the United Nations in addressing global ocean challenges.
Participants will also visit the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and take part in an interactive moot court simulation.

WMU-GOI experts will contribute to the Summer Academy with two lectures.
On Monday, 3 August – Dr. Aleke Stöfen-O'Brien, Associate Professor, and Akrita Kaur, Project and Research Support Intern, will deliver the opening session, "Introduction to the UN's Work on Ocean Governance and Maritime Affairs." The session will introduce participants to the United Nations' role in ocean governance, outline key maritime issues, and provide an opportunity to discuss participants' expectations for the week.
On Thursday, 6 August – Professor Ronán Long, Director of WMU-GOI, will present the lecture "The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and its Role in Ocean Governance," examining the Tribunal's contribution to the development and implementation of international law governing the oceans.
