
The World Maritime University (WMU) welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Association of Germany (DGVN) to its headquarters in Malmö, Sweden, on 3 July 2026. The delegation, comprising 15 students, early-career professionals and members of the Association, visited WMU to gain a better understanding of the University's role within the United Nations system and its contributions to maritime affairs and ocean governance.

The programme included a guided tour of WMU's historic Main Building, as well as a presentation from Professor Henning Jessen, Nippon Foundation Chair in Maritime Law and Digital Change, who introduced the University's mission, academic programmes and unique relationship with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.
The presentation prompted a discussion on contemporary issues in ocean governance, including legal aspects relating to the Strait of Hormuz.
The delegation also visited the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute (WMU-GOI), where they were introduced to the Institute's research, education and capacity development activities supporting sustainable ocean governance.

The visit provided an opportunity for participants to gain first-hand insight into the work of WMU and the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, while exploring the University's contribution to maritime affairs and ocean governance within the framework of the United Nations system.
The visit formed part of a broader study seminar organized by the DGVN which also included meetings with representatives from United Nations organizations in Copenhagen. The seminar was coordinated by Mr Tim Pöppel, Project and Research Associate at the WMU-GOI, who also serves as a volunteer with the United Nations Association of Germany.
